Spectacular wooded canyons with headwater lakes break off the White
Cloud’s northern edge into the Salmon River. These include Big and
Little Casino, Rough Creek, Warm Springs and Slate Creek. Also, here
are seldom-visited drainages with secret ponds, lush springs and thick
forests. Places like Treon, Elk, Mill, Holman, French and Sullivan
Creeks. Landmarks include Lookout Mountain, 9,954’; O’Calkens Lakes
and Bighorn Basin, and Potaman Peak, 9,376’.

Trailheads to the Salmon River Breaks are
located off Highway 75, near Stanley, down river
toward Clayton. Some trails depart just off the
Salmon River. Others are accessed by backcountry
roads like Rough Creek and Slate Creek, which go
deeper into the mountains.
