Encounters
with humans have made the black Phantom Hill wolves more elusive and
cautious as they move like shadows through the mountains near Ketchum and
Sun Valley. Good fortune was with the Phantoms this past sheep grazing
season as they escaped being killed because of wolf-livestock encounters.
Only a concentrated effort by wolf supporters, sheep ranchers and agencies
kept the Phantom family intact. It helped that the Phantoms are a small
pack consisting of the two alphas, a two-year female, a yearling male and
four pups.
