Basin Butte Lookout &
Little Basin Creek Meadow
Salmon-Challis National
Forest, July 23,
2008 |
|
Basin Butte is a landmark in the
Salmon River Mountains north of Stanley. A fierce storm had hit the day
before our outing, leaving several inches of hail, large mud puddles and
downed trees. Our intrepid group drove through fog, the puddles and sawed
our way to the Lookout where the sun was shining.
We enjoyed a 360' panorama that includes the southern Frank Church - River
of No Return Wilderness, the vast meadows of Cape Horn, and the White
Clouds and Sawtooths. We also hiked into Little Basin Creek Meadow, looked
for wildlife and explored some early day ruins. The Meadow is slowly
healing from a century of sheep and cattle grazing. The Basin Butte region
is an important biological link for wildlife between the protected country
in the Frank and the nearby Sawtooth Wilderness.
