In late April we took this splendid hike above the Salmon River near Stanley. We saw osprey soaring over the river. Elk crossed our path. Vast woodlands of Big and Little Casino Creeks in the White Clouds stretched to the east. The jagged Sawtooths were to the west. Patty Healey showed us tiny steershead wildflowers. Jeanne Cassell helped us to identify other plants. Some of our route was a steep, rutted old mining road that's closed to motorized use, but which ATVs trespass upon. BWCC has contacted the Challis Forest about keeping this area non-motorized to protect wildlife and fragile soils.
