Elk Meadow Revisited (Sawtooth Mountains)
June
27, 1998

After
the prior year’s fence round up, this trip was a breeze.
Michael Mancuso,
botanist, was our guest and we learned of the wildflowers, grasses, sedges
and woody species along Elk Creek and in the serene meadow.
We looked at
stream banks that are slowly starting to recover from a century of
livestock grazing.
Elk Meadow is a wonderful family hike either from
Stanley Lake trailhead or Elk Creek.
In late June, wildflowers fill this
peaceful setting, and sand hill cranes, elk, moose, coyotes and sometimes,
even wolves, are present.
